WHAT IS SCHOOL MENTAL HEALTH

School mental health services and supports are an effective means of addressing the mental health needs of children and improving the learning environment. Our comprehensive school mental health services help educators and caregivers prevent and respond to crises, while fostering a school climate that supports effective teaching and learning.

About Our School Mental Health Initiative

Our Cultural Certified Mental Health First Aid Responder Life Coaches are "experienced and seasoned" with training in mental health that teaches the public how to recognize symptoms of mental health problems, how to offer, provide initial help during an on-set, and how to guide a person toward receiving appropriate treatments and other supportive help.

Our School Mental Health Initiative Program:

Our future coaching relationship is designed to be a profound and life-altering transformational journey. During this time, our coaches guide students through a deliberate and proven coaching process that is guaranteed to consistently produce breakthrough results.

Structured yet flexible, extra sessions can be added to an existing program to meet specific needs, address a specific situation, or further integrate a particular step.
Coaching (not therapy):

Our Integrative Coaching sessions is designed to support you in accessing and coming to trust your own innate wisdom and intelligence. Unlike traditional counseling or therapy where individuals look to someone else for guidance, Integrative Coaching guides an individual to bring forth his/her own inner wisdom using advanced exercises and techniques that will provide support, while an individual look within for their own answers.
Life Learning (not just coaching):

This Integrative Coaching models is distinct from many other types of coaching because it is specifically designed to teach new life perspectives, distinctions, practices, and skills.

In each of our weekly coaching sessions, individuals will be taught a new concept to empower themselves in understanding and handling the circumstances and experiences of his/her life.

Through our integrative coaching sessions, students can improve outcomes through social and emotional supports by building positive relationships and increasing school engagement to help concentrate on learning. Families are critical in their children’s education and that school staff needs be able to address mental health needs. Partnerships between schools, youth, families, and mental health providers can result in improved academic outcomes.

B.R.A.I.N. (SM)ART - Building Resilience and Improving Neuroplasticity for Self-Management and Anger Replacement Training
Emotional Balance and Behavior Regulation Coaching - Youth PBIS Program

Learning "How to Balance Emotions" is critical to every day survival for youth!!! Unfortunately, there are many external and internal environmental factors that adversely effect the brain and the nervous system, which impairs the ability of youth to regulate their emotions and make mature decisions.

B.R.A.I.N. (SM)ART is a self-managing, Mental Health and Environmental Intervention Program to build resilience, manage anger, balance the body's energy systems and influence healthy brain development to maximize the fullest potential for improving negative behaviors and performance, to reduce psychological and spiritual stress, and to promote the balance of body, mind and spirit for overall well-being and mental health wellness.

WHAT ABOUT LEAD - THE POSSIBLE UNDERLYING CAUSE OF YOUTH EMOTIONAL IMBALANCE AND BEHAVIORAL DEREGULATION
Facts: According to the Center for Disease Control, the City of Milwaukee has the highest prevalence rates for high-levels of lead poisoning than many other states. It is a "truthful" fact that due to the high levels of lead poisoning of the City of Milwaukee's children of color, this may very well be the key factor of child abuse and neglect, violence, high-school dropouts, suicide, and crime that is currently taking place in our City. Inner city poor children are at high-risk, presumably due to the older built of homes within the city.

The presence of lead in the human body causes damage to the brain and the central nervous system through several mechanisms.

Lead exposure has been found to increase the risk of numerous conditions that may have adverse effects on nervous system functioning, including hypertension, impaired renal function, impaired thyroid function, vitamin d deficiency, seizures, coma, and pre-term birth.

Neurotoxicity is a term used to describe neurophysiological changes caused by exposure to toxic agents. These changes are caused by exposure to toxic agents, which may result in cognitive changes, memory disorders, and changes in mood or onset of psychiatric disturbances. (Han et al., Caban-Holt et al., and Mason, et al.)

Damaged brain creates specific learning disabilities that interfere with educational progress. The adverse effects of lead impacts the following skills:
-
Conceptual - Problem solving and cause effect relationship;
-
Visual-Spatial - Has trouble with visual processing and spatial relation;
-
Social Skills - Difficulty picking up on social cues and sharing information in a socially appropriate way;
-
Abstract - Has problems organizing thoughts for expression;
-
Attention Deficit (ADHD) - Difficulty concentrating, considering consequences, and controlling impulse; and
-
Emotional Disturbance - Uncontrollable Anger, Anxiety, Stress and Depression.

The region of the brain that controls the regulation and functioning of "emotions" is developed before the region of the brain that is responsible for regulating effective executive functioning. As a result of the process of the brain's development, it is scientifically proven that the only response to survival youth can make prior to the age of 24-25 is "Emotional Response," because human nature responds to emotions before we are able to think rationally.

Our natural healing treatments helps to improve brain plasticity for improved focus, concentration and relaxation training as a living-well intervention tool to regulate emotions, calm behaviors, and improve explicit and implicit learning and memory for optimal executive functioning.

These are effective interventions that help to reduce "inter-generational illiteracy" and improve executive functioning for logic and reasoning to promote adaptive behavior & coping strategies for over-all well-being. The interventions also decrease the likelihood of long-term mental health problems (Weisz et al., 2005).

We specialize in coaching young people with behavioral and mental health disorders, and learning disabilities to work toward positive change. As a former teacher, I integrate my extensive teaching, natural healing experience, human resource development, and extensive research to guide at-risk, disenfranchised youth in personal and spiritual development to maximize their fullest potential for over-all well-being! We use our coaching expertise and successful experiences to support young people committed to change. Our Shift Coaching program offers a combination of evidence-based health coaching and positive behavior intervention support tailored to meet individual needs.

PARENTAL ROLE DURING DEVELOPMENTAL STAGES

Young children referred to CPS may experience a range of adverse early experiences, including abuse, homelessness, poverty, neglect, and exposure to violence. These experiences can lead to a variety of problems, including difficulties with the regulation of behavior, physiology, and affect. (Bernard, Butzin-Dozier, Rittenhouse, & Dozier, 2010; Gunner & Vazquez 2001)

Parents play a critical role in supporting young children's regulatory development during infancy, and in helping children as they gradually begin to take over regulatory functions themselves during the toddler & preschool years. (Calkins & Keane, 2009; Kopp; 1982; Raves, 1996)

CPS services often fail to provide the kinds of interventions critical for the development of children's regulatory capabilities. (Dadds, Mulllins, McAllister, & Atkinson, 2003; Shipman et. al., 2007)

Our coaches take career development and entrepreneurship personally!!! We provide life-long advocacy, career, entrepreneur and vocational coaching and training to elementary, middle and high-school students.

Because there are increasing numbers of students who are at-risk of dropping out of school, the particular situations of these students deserve attention. Basic to the success of any program for at-risk students is addressing students’ basic needs to get them motivated and interested in career development activities – Early intervention may encourage the completion of high school requirements. Common factors for at-risk students are low self-esteem, substance abuse, underachievement (may be learning or emotionally disabled), teen pregnancy, and violence and crime.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Secretary’s Commission of Achieving Necessary Skills 1992 report on earning a living suggests that the importance of the work ethic be emphasized with at-risk youth. For economic, social, cultural, or academic reasons, these students do not have access to educational or occupational opportunities or have experienced a cycle of failure and poverty.
African-American children living in Milwaukee County lag behind their white counterparts in academics, basic skills, and self-development. Studies show that from a single parent’s perspective, children need to find role models and mentors to assist them in the occupational process.
A child’s potential for academic and/or social success depends on many factors, to include, but is not limited to:
-
Values
-
Work attitudes
-
Family goals
-
Socioeconomic issues that affect decisions
-
What support systems are available from immediate family, extended family, community, or churches protection.
